Photographer's Notes
THE DECK IN THE TREES
The pine trunks frame you on the deck, and the light under the trees is better in late afternoon than at midday. The walk through the pines from the deck to the Pavilion usually gives us good candid photos.
LIGHTING THE PAVILION
The peak of the roof is too high to bounce light off, so we put flashes on stands at table height. The open side faces west, and at sunset the light pours straight in for couple photos at the end of the night.
Planning a Wedding Here
The State Game Lodge Pavilion puts a full-size wedding inside Custer State Park, 50 to 55 minutes south of Rapid City. That sentence alone explains most of its appeal. The rest is in the details: a ceremony deck in the trees, a 4,000-square-foot open-air pavilion that seats a genuinely big guest list, and a park around you that occasionally contributes a bison to the morning.
The deck in the pines
Ceremonies happen on the Lover's Leap Deck, which sits inside the tree line rather than on cleared lawn. Pine trunks frame you from the sides and the creek overlook adds depth behind. Canopy light is the thing to plan around: at midday it throws patchy shadows across faces, while late afternoon light comes through low and even. We push for later ceremony times here whenever the schedule allows. Afterward comes our favorite part of this venue, the 200-foot walk from the deck through the pines back to the Pavilion. We just stay ahead of you and let the corridor do the work.
A big room with no walls
An open-air structure this size runs on ambient light and wind. The gabled roof is too high to bounce light off, so we bring our own: flash heads on stands at table height along the head-table line and the dance floor edge. In the last hour of sun, the west-facing open side lets sunset pour straight into the building, and we always pull the two of you aside for a few frames in it.
The park does some of the photography
The Wildlife Loop Road starts at the lodge complex entrance, and through summer the bison herds move near it most mornings. A twenty-minute drive on the loop before getting-ready has produced portraits with bison at a respectful distance, and it barely dents the timeline. If the day itself is too full, the Needles Highway and Sylvan Lake are 20 to 25 minutes north and make a strong day-before session.
One piece of admin is yours. Every vehicle entering Custer State Park needs an entrance license, and the resort's wedding packages have included a one-day park pass for your guests. An event of more than 50 people also needs written permission from South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks: the Special Event Application, on the GF&P forms page, filed at least 15 days before the date, with no fee for the application itself. The resort's events team is the place to start, and we're happy to point you to the right form.
The season here runs June through September, and there is getting-ready space on site. Nine to ten hours of coverage is typical, and depending on what you need, we do anywhere from eight to twelve. If the Pavilion is your venue, send us your date and we will build the timeline around the deck light and the loop.

FAQ
The Lover's Leap Deck is a redwood ceremony platform set among the pines on the west side of the State Game Lodge complex, overlooking Coolidge Creek. It sits 200 feet from the Pavilion entrance, connected by a pine-corridor path. The deck is designed to feel embedded in the forest rather than cleared from it — guests stand under a pine canopy with the creek below. It is the most photographically distinctive ceremony setting in the State Game Lodge complex.
The Pavilion has a recommended capacity of approximately 350 guests in banquet long-table configuration. At 4,000 square feet, it is one of the largest single reception spaces at any Custer State Park Resort venue. The open-air structure (covered but not walled) means wind and ambient light are factors in the reception environment — a different experience from an enclosed ballroom, and worth discussing with the resort events team if your guest count approaches the upper range.
Yes. The Pavilion includes a bridal changing room. For large wedding parties, the resort lodges and cabins on the State Game Lodge complex are bookable for the night before and morning of the wedding, providing additional getting-ready space. Summer and fall dates at the park lodges book early; secure rooms when you confirm the venue date.
South Dakota Game Fish & Parks permits birdseed, bubbles, dried lavender, and shepherds hooks for floral arrangements. Prohibited items include confetti, glitter, rice, hay, straw, nails, screws, staples, tape, command strips, smoke machines, and open-flame candles. These restrictions apply consistently across all Custer State Park Resort venues, including the Pavilion and the Event Barn. Florists and décor vendors who work the park regularly are already familiar with these requirements.
The Wildlife Loop Road entrance is minutes from the State Game Lodge complex, and bison herds frequently position on the north section of the loop near the lodge during summer months. The animals are free-ranging, and no morning is guaranteed, but the probability of encountering bison within a short drive of the Pavilion is high from June through September. Some couples build a morning Wildlife Loop stop into the pre-ceremony timeline as a portrait opportunity.
Event Barn wedding packages can add a Lover's Leap Deck ceremony upgrade for an additional fee — giving you the Pavilion's creek-overlook ceremony setting while keeping the Event Barn as your reception space. If you book the Pavilion directly as your reception venue, the Lover's Leap Deck ceremony is included. Confirm current package configurations with the resort events team.
