Photographer's Notes
THE OAK LAWN
The dappled shade under the oaks looks romantic in person but blotchy in photos, so we put you in front of open sky with the trees behind you. We settle which way the ceremony faces at the walkthrough.
BARN INTERIOR
The warm wood looks lovely under reception lighting, but the ceiling is too low to bounce a flash off, so we light the first dance with a flash from the side. Let the coordinator know if you're planning string lights or chandeliers.
Planning a Wedding Here
The State Game Lodge Event Barn gives you a barn wedding inside Custer State Park, 50 to 55 minutes south of Rapid City. That combination is rarer than it sounds. Barn venues are everywhere; barn venues where the morning drive might include bison are not.
The creek lawn
Ceremonies happen on the lawn along Grace Coolidge Creek, under a canopy of oaks. Standing there, the dappled shade feels perfect. In photographs, dappled shade is the enemy: bright patches and dark holes across faces in the same frame. Our fix is positioning, not luck. We keep the oak canopy behind you as background and use the open sky as backlight, so faces stay evenly lit while the trees still do their work in the frame. Which way the two of you face gets decided at the walkthrough, with the sun's path in hand. Afterward, the paved path from lawn to barn gives us a natural recessional shot with the creek trailing behind.
Inside the barn
The all-wood interior is kind to photographs. Warm timber reflects light the way painted drywall never does, and reception coverage benefits from it all night. The trade-off is a lower ceiling than a purpose-built hall, which changes how flash behaves, so we run an off-camera strobe beside the dance floor aimed at the head table for the first dance and toasts. Ask your coordinator what the barn's own lighting plan is, string lights or uplighting or chandelier, and we will build around it rather than against it.
The bison are actually available
The Wildlife Loop Road is reachable straight from the lodge complex, ten minutes out and back, and free-ranging herds graze along it all summer. On a morning with time to spare, a short drive has put couples and bison in the same frame at a respectful distance. No one can promise where the animals stand on a given morning, but from June through September the odds run in your favor, and it is the single most South Dakota thing a wedding gallery can hold.
The park itself asks a little of you. Every vehicle entering Custer State Park needs an entrance license, and the resort's wedding packages have included a one-day park pass for your guests. An event of more than 50 people also needs written permission from South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks: the Special Event Application, on the GF&P forms page, filed at least 15 days before the date, with no fee for the application itself. That paperwork is yours to arrange, the resort's events team is the place to start, and we're happy to point you to the right form.
The season is June through September and getting ready happens on site. Coverage usually runs nine to ten hours, though we can plan anywhere from eight to twelve around your day. If the Event Barn is your pick, send us your date and we will plan the lawn light, the barn light, and the bison detour in that order.

FAQ
The State Game Lodge was established in the 1920s and served as the Summer White House for President Calvin Coolidge in 1927. The lodge and its surrounding buildings were developed as part of the early Custer State Park infrastructure. The Event Barn is a repurposed structure from the working-ranch era of the complex. The Grace Coolidge Creekside Ceremony Lawn is named for First Lady Grace Coolidge, who spent the summer at the lodge with the President.
Event Barn wedding packages can add a ceremony at the State Game Lodge Pavilion's Lover's Leap Deck for an additional fee — an upgrade that gives you the Pavilion's creek-overlook ceremony setting while keeping the Event Barn as your reception space. The Pavilion is on the same complex, approximately 200 feet from the barn. This option was introduced for the 2025 season.
The State Game Lodge is approximately 50–55 minutes south of Rapid City via US-16 to SD-16A (the Wildlife Loop Road). The Wildlife Loop Road approach to the complex passes through open bison range — guests will likely see free-ranging animals on the drive in. A Custer State Park entrance fee or annual pass is required for all vehicles entering the park.
Yes — bison, pronghorn, and burros commonly cross the Wildlife Loop Road between the park entrance and the State Game Lodge complex. The herds move seasonally, but in summer months the north section of the Wildlife Loop near the lodge is the steadiest bison-viewing stretch in the park. For portrait work, we can build a morning Wildlife Loop stop into a day-before or day-of timeline if the herd is positioned cooperatively.
South Dakota Game Fish & Parks permits birdseed, bubbles, and dried lavender at ceremonies. Prohibited items include confetti, glitter, rice, hay or straw, nails, screws, staples, tape, command strips, smoke machines, and open-flame candles. Shepherds hooks for floral arrangements are permitted. These rules apply to all Custer State Park Resort venues, including the Event Barn ceremony lawn and the Pavilion.
Custer State Park is run by South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, and its rules ask for written permission for any event of more than 50 people on park land. That's the Special Event Application, on the GF&P forms page, filed at least 15 days before the date, with no fee for the application itself. Paperwork like that is yours to arrange, not ours. Start with the resort's events team: the resort's wedding packages have included a one-day park pass for your guests, and the team can tell you what the park needs from you for your guest count. We're happy to point you to the right form, and any permission we need as your photographers is ours to take care of.
Our collections show what each one covers and what it costs. Tell us about your day and we'll help you work out what it needs.
