Weddings are most of our year. The rest of it is the couples and families who come back: an engagement in the Badlands, a senior before her last season, a baby three weeks old, four generations on the same afternoon. Here is what those look like and what they start at.

Up to two hours somewhere that means something to you: Sylvan Lake at first light, the Badlands when the wind drops, or the road you drove the summer you met.

One hour is enough for one place, and two gives you a second place and time to change. It is also the easiest way to get used to a camera before the wedding day, which is most of why we suggest it.

Senior portraits

We start where the senior wants to be photographed — Custer State Park, downtown Rapid City, the field behind the house — and keep moving so it never feels like a school picture.

Bring three or four changes of clothes. We'll tell you when the light is about to be at its best.

The first few weeks

Newborn

At your house, in the first two to three weeks after birth, on whatever schedule the baby sets. Nothing is posed that the baby does not settle into on their own.

We book these loosely. Tell us the due date, and we'll hold the three weeks after it for you.

Once a year, or once a decade

Family

An hour outdoors, usually in the last hour of light: Spearfish Canyon in the fall, the prairie east of town in the summer, Sylvan Lake when the aspens turn.

If everyone is together for a weekend and you want the whole family in one frame, say so when you write. We plan those around whoever has traveled furthest.
