Photographer's Notes

What we know from shooting here.

What indoor lighting at the Pavilion actually means for your photos

The Genpro Energy Pavilion is an industrial building: steel structure, high bay ceilings, and overhead lighting that was designed for a trade show or agricultural exhibit, not a wedding reception. Depending on the fixture type installed, you are likely looking at overhead ambient light with a color temperature and intensity that is not optimized for photography. This is not unusual for large-format event halls, and it does not mean the photography suffers; it means we approach the venue differently than we would a hotel ballroom with programmable chandeliers. For reception coverage we bring off-camera flash setups and portable LED panels that we balance against the overhead ambient. The result is a warmer, more three-dimensional quality than pure overhead light produces. If you are working with a lighting vendor for your reception, whether uplighting, string lights, or production wash, coordinate with us before the event so we can calibrate our approach to whatever color temperature they are using. A venue like this rewards couples who invest in event lighting because that investment directly improves what we can produce on camera. For the ceremony itself, if you are doing it in the pavilion, we recommend positioning the couple with their backs to the primary overhead light source so faces are not in deep shadow. Walk the space with your coordinator before the day and decide together where guests will be seated relative to the light; this small choice shows up directly in the ceremony photos.

The fairgrounds as a backdrop — when it works and when to plan around it

The Central States Fairgrounds is a working agricultural and events campus, and the visual character of the outdoor grounds reflects that: open concrete areas, the grandstand arena, utilitarian building facades, and the large-scale infrastructure of a multi-purpose fair venue. If your aesthetic is clean and formal, the grounds are the wrong backdrop and we will plan the nearby parks instead. If you want a western working-grounds feel, the fairgrounds has its own visual logic that can work well. The WW Grandstand Arena and the outer edges of the grounds near the livestock areas have a distinct American agricultural aesthetic that reads authentically rather than set-dressed. Couples who choose it on purpose, wanting regional and specific over generically romantic, use the grounds to real advantage. We assess the current condition of the outdoor areas at each visit because the fairgrounds' appearance shifts depending on what events have recently been on property. In August, the Central States Fair is running and the grounds are not available for rentals. The September weeks immediately after fair close give you the grounds in their post-event state — not their most polished, but if you are comfortable with that, you gain access to a venue that rarely has weekend availability in that window.

Portrait locations a short drive from the fairgrounds

The Genpro Pavilion sits on the east side of Rapid City, a mile off I-90, and that is a practical strength: several strong portrait locations sit a short drive away, so you are not stuck on the fairgrounds for your couple portraits if the campus aesthetic is not what you want for those images. Canyon Lake Park is on the west side of town, about 15 minutes away. The park has a reservoir, a pedestrian dam walkway, mature cottonwoods along the creek, and a covered shelter that provides shade on bright midday days. We use it often, because the combination of open water, tree canopy, and walking paths gives you variety within a small geographic area. Fifteen minutes of portraits at Canyon Lake typically produces images that span three or four distinctly different visual settings. Dinosaur Park is about ten minutes away on a hilltop overlooking the city — concrete dinosaur sculptures from the 1930s with an open-air city panorama. It is a Rapid City landmark and nothing else in town photographs quite like it. Downtown Rapid City's Main Street Square and Art Alley are about five minutes west, and Chapel in the Hills is on the far west side of town, about 20 minutes away, if you want a traditional architectural backdrop with pine forest context.

Portrait Spots

1
Canyon Lake Park15 minutes · Late afternoon
A reservoir, pedestrian dam walkway, mature cottonwoods, and Rapid Creek — one of our most-used Rapid City portrait locations. The variety of water, tree canopy, and open paths gives you several distinct visual settings within a short walk. Fifteen minutes here typically produces images that span four different visual registers.
2
Dinosaur Park10 minutes · Late afternoon for city panorama
1930s concrete dinosaur sculptures on a hilltop above Rapid City with an open panoramic view of the city and Black Hills ridgeline. Distinctive and fast — a strong option for a 15-minute portrait stop that produces images unlike anything else in the Rapid City area.
3
Downtown Rapid City — Main Street Square and Art Alley5 minutes · Late afternoon
The Presidents sculpture walk, Art Alley murals, and brick commercial streetscape of downtown Rapid City. Best when the gallery wants an urban, architectural backdrop against the reception interiors. Art Alley in particular photographs well in diffused light.
