Photographer's Notes
THE FRAWLEY BARNS
At midday, hard light streaks through the gaps in the barn siding, so we bring a flash in every season. Outside, a late-afternoon ceremony facing west looks lovely, while a morning ceremony facing east leaves your guests squinting.
CANYON AND COVERAGE
The north end of Spearfish Canyon is ten minutes away. Cocktail hour is the time to go, and late September brings the birch color. The Barns and the Event Center are a drive apart, so we recommend two photographers here.
Planning a Wedding Here
Elkhorn Ridge Resort spreads across the old Frawley Ranch outside Spearfish, 45 minutes north of Rapid City on I-90. Its barns have stood for 150 years, and that age is exactly what the photographs pick up: weathered siding, hand-cut timber joints, and ranch land running to the horizon. New venues imitate this look. Here it is just the property.
Old barns, tricky light
The same weathered siding that looks so good outside lets midday sun leak through the gaps inside, throwing hard, streaky shafts across the room. Those shafts can be dramatic in the right frame and ruinous in a family group photo, so we bring at least one off-camera strobe for barn interiors in every season and take control of the light rather than accepting it. Outside, ceremony direction matters: a west-facing setup in late afternoon flatters everyone, while an east-facing morning ceremony aims your guests straight into the sun. We check the sun line at the walkthrough so the chairs face the right way.
Spearfish Canyon during cocktail hour
The north mouth of Spearfish Canyon is ten minutes from the resort, and it is the best portrait detour in the northern Hills. Limestone walls, the creek, and canyon shade that stays cool through summer afternoons. We recommend spending cocktail hour there rather than tacking it on after the reception, when energy and light are both fading. If you are marrying in late September or early October, the canyon's birches and cottonwoods turn reliably, and that foliage window alone is a reason to pick those dates.
Why we recommend a second photographer here
Elkhorn Ridge is a multi-space venue on a working ranch, and moving between the Courtyard Barns and the Event Center is a drive, not a stroll. That is why we recommend two photographers here: one can stay with the two of you through portraits while the other covers guest arrival, the untouched reception room, and the details before the crowd lands. Sort out the guest transport plan with the venue at your walkthrough, and we will fold our coverage around it.
The practical frame: getting ready happens on site, the season goes May through October, and coverage here usually runs ten to eleven hours because of the distances involved. We can do anywhere from eight to twelve, but budget the extra hour if you can. On a property this spread out, it is the difference between rushing and actually enjoying your own cocktail hour. If Elkhorn Ridge is where you land, send us your date and we will plan the barns, the canyon, and the drive between them.
Sample Timeline
| Time | Event | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00 AM | Bridal party arrives at Anderson Ranch House or Courtyard Barns farmhouse | Get-ready space is separate from guest areas; hair and makeup have ample room and natural light near windows |
| 11:30 AM | Detail photography — florals, rings, dress, accessories | Ranch house or farmhouse interiors work well for detail work before the outdoor light gets too harsh |
| 1:00 PM | First look — Courtyard Barns grounds or Southwest Fields | Early afternoon light on the ranch is direct; look for shade from barn structures or trees for flattering light |
| 1:30 PM | Wedding party portraits across ranch property | Cover barn exterior, fields, and ranch terrain before guest arrival; ranch scale means 60+ minutes is realistic |
| 3:30 PM | Guest arrival and ceremony | Confirm ceremony site direction and sun angle at walkthrough; west-facing outdoor ceremony works best for afternoon events |
| 5:00 PM | Cocktail hour — Spearfish Canyon detour option | Canyon north entrance is 10 min away; 20-minute portrait detour fits inside cocktail hour without rushing |
| 6:00 PM | Reception dinner — Event Center or barns | Transition to off-camera flash; Event Center has consistent indoor light, barns require more supplemental lighting management |

FAQ
The Courtyard Barns at Frawley Ranch are 150-year-old working barn structures on the historic ranch property — open seasonally June through October. They offer a ceremony grounds, a farmhouse for getting ready, and a reception space with a rustic aesthetic tied to the working ranch. The Event Center is a purpose-built reception hall with Southwest Fields outdoor ceremony space, available year-round. Both share access to the same 36 guest cabins on the property.
Elkhorn Ridge is approximately 45 minutes north of Rapid City via I-90. Spearfish is the northernmost major town in the Black Hills corridor, which puts the venue close to the Wyoming border. For guests flying into Rapid City Regional Airport, the drive is straightforward on Interstate 90.
Yes — 36 fully-furnished cabins are available for nightly rental on the resort property. The Draper Roadhouse is also available for larger extended-family or wedding-party groups. Having accommodation on-site simplifies logistics considerably for destination weddings and reduces the coordination required for shuttle service between hotels and the venue.
For Event Center weddings, the historic Anderson Ranch House serves as the bridal suite on the day of the wedding. For an additional fee, it can also be used as a honeymoon suite the night of the wedding. For Courtyard Barns weddings, the farmhouse on the barns' grounds provides a getting-ready space. Both are separate from guest and vendor traffic, so getting-ready photography stays clean.
Yes — the canyon entrance is about ten minutes from the resort, and a portrait detour can fit inside the cocktail-hour window without requiring guests to wait. We recommend building this into the timeline at booking if you want canyon images, rather than treating it as an improvised addition. The canyon in fall, when the cottonwoods turn, is one of the strongest seasonal portrait windows in the northern Black Hills.
Elkhorn Ridge generally allows couples to work with caterers of their choosing, which is less common among venues of this scale. For photographers, we are not aware of an approved-list requirement, but confirm with the venue at booking as policies can change season to season.
