Photographer's Notes
CULLINAN HALL
The 33-foot ceiling pulls the light up and away from faces, so we set two flashes low to fill it in. The window light changes with the seasons, so we arrange the ceremony around the sun rather than the furniture.
SPRING CREEK AND SHERIDAN LAKE
We can take creekside portraits right on the property. Sheridan Lake is five minutes away, and a twenty-minute side trip there is usually worth it.
Planning a Wedding Here
Diamond Spur Events Center sits four miles north of Hill City, 30 to 35 minutes from Rapid City down Highway 16. Its centerpiece is Cullinan Hall: a 33-foot cathedral ceiling, exposed timber frame, and a stone fireplace that anchors one end of the room. Very few Black Hills interiors have this kind of scale, and the wide shots prove it.
Big ceilings, big light problem
Here is what 33 feet of ceiling does to photography: it pulls the ambient light up and away from people. The room looks dramatic in wide frames and dim at face height once the dancing starts. We solve it with two flash units, one planted near the fireplace end and one moving with the dance floor, so the architecture and the faces both get exposed properly. The hall's windows matter too. Where the natural light lands at 3 PM in June is not where it lands at 5 PM in October, so we scout the ceremony setup against the window line before the day.
Water on the property, and more nearby
Spring Creek runs through the Diamond Spur land, which means creekside portraits on private ground: filtered pine light, moving water, rock outcroppings. We like using the creek twice, once with the wedding party before guests arrive, then again with just the two of you during cocktail hour. And Sheridan Lake waits five minutes up the road. Granite boulders, clear water, ponderosa framing the sky. A 20-minute lake detour during cocktail hour is one of our most repeated recommendations, because it earns its spot in the gallery almost every time.
One question to ask early
Some Black Hills venues keep an approved vendor list for photographers. Ask Diamond Spur about their current photographer policy while you are still in the inquiry stage, before any deposit. We have worked inside approved-vendor frameworks at several venues and the process is painless, but it is a question for week one, not a surprise for month six.
The rest is friendly: getting ready happens on site, the season runs May through October, and a typical day here carries ten to eleven hours of coverage. That sounds like a lot until you count the locations. The hall, the creek, and the lake each deserve real time, and the longer coverage is what lets you have all three without feeling herded. Depending on your plans, we can do anywhere from eight to twelve.
If Cullinan Hall has your attention, send us your date and we will map where the window light will be at your ceremony hour.

FAQ
Cullinan Hall is the main event space at Diamond Spur: 7,000 square feet of timber-frame construction with 33-foot cathedral ceilings, exposed beams, and a grand stone fireplace at the center. At that ceiling height, the interior photographs with a drama that most Black Hills ballrooms cannot match. The tradeoff is that high ceilings require supplemental lighting for reception and dancing coverage, so we plan two flash units rather than the one we bring to lower-ceiling venues. The Spring Creek ceremony site outside the hall adds a water-adjacent outdoor option on private property.
Sheridan Lake is five minutes from the venue — it is the closest high-quality supplemental portrait location to any Black Hills venue we regularly work with. Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park is 20 minutes south. Both feature granite boulders, clear mountain water, and the Central Black Hills horizon. Sheridan Lake is realistic as a cocktail-hour portrait detour; Sylvan Lake works better as a day-before or morning-of engagement session location.
Diamond Spur maintains an approved photographer list on its website. Confirm that your photographer is on the approved list during the venue inquiry process rather than after a deposit is paid — this is standard practice at venues with curated vendor lists.
Two dedicated suites, the Dresden and the Farnese, are included in every package and available from 9:00 AM on the event day. Both are well-lit, comfortable prep spaces, and the distance between the suites and Cullinan Hall makes first-look privacy easy without staging tricks. Couple portraits on the Spring Creek pathway between the suites and the hall give a forested, creekside backdrop before the ceremony.
The Marquise Package covers a 15-hour event window (9am–midnight), exclusive property access, bar team, arbors for the outdoor ceremony site, outdoor lawn games, setup and teardown, and access to both getting-ready suites; contact the venue for current pricing. The Elegance Package extends across two days for weddings that want vendor setup time the evening before.
The timber-frame estate interior and heated outdoor patio give Diamond Spur all-weather capability that makes year-round events feasible. The Spring Creek outdoor ceremony site is weather-dependent and best suited to May through October. The Hwy 385 corridor between Rapid City and Hill City is well-maintained year-round, making winter access more manageable than some of the higher-elevation venues in the northern Hills.
