FOUR SITES, ONE ROUTE
There are four places to use here: the chapel, the gazebo, the covered bridge and the open field. The gazebo and the bridge are on the same loop by the river, the chapel takes a little more travel time, and we walk the field ahead of time to see what will be in the background.
EARLY SUNSET BEHIND THE RIDGE
The Black Hills sit to the southwest, so the ridge blocks the sun 30 to 45 minutes before sunset, and summer portraits happen between 6:30 and 7:30. The white cottage is the best room for detail photos at any ranch we photograph, so plan to have it for the 90 minutes before the family photos.
Planning a Wedding Here
Besler's Cadillac Ranch spreads across a thousand acres near Saint Onge, about an hour and ten minutes from Rapid City through Spearfish. It gives couples a decision most venues never offer: four ceremony sites, each one a different wedding.
Four ceremonies, one day
The log chapel, the river gazebo, the covered bridge, and the open field all photograph beautifully and all shape the day differently. The gazebo and covered bridge sit near each other by the Red Water River, so one portrait loop can use both. The chapel adds transit time to the barn and we plan for it. The open field is the dramatic choice and the demanding one: a ceremony in the middle of that much grass needs its sightlines walked in advance, or the processional shots become guesswork. Whichever way you lean, sit down with Josh and Alison before the day and lock the setup, and we will walk the route between ceremony and barn so the transition never goes uncovered.
Golden hour keeps ranch hours
Saint Onge lies east of the Black Hills, which means the ridge sits southwest of you and takes the sun early, sometimes 30 to 45 minutes before a true horizon would. In summer we run the big portrait session at roughly 6:30 to 7:30 PM instead of the 8 o'clock window we would use inside the hills. The river and the open prairie hold good east- and north-facing light through the afternoon, so the early exit costs less than it sounds. When the outdoor light goes, the barn is fully lit and we move to flash without missing a beat.
The white cottage
The getting-ready cottage is the best detail-photography room we work with at any ranch venue: white walls, natural light, open floor. Rings, florals, and the dress all photograph cleanly with no visual noise behind them, and the hair and makeup team gets room to breathe. Arrive at least 90 minutes before family portraits begin, because the work we do in that cottage earns its place in the album. Larger parties should ask the Beslers whether the old farmhouse is available as a second room.
The season runs May through October, and coverage here usually runs ten to eleven hours, though we can do as few as eight or as many as twelve depending on your plans. On a property with four ceremony sites, a river, and a cottage this good, that is not padding. It is the time the place deserves.
If the ranch is your direction, send us your date and your ceremony-site shortlist and we will tell you how each option moves the light.
Sample Timeline
| Time | Event | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 9:30 AM | Bridal party arrives at getting-ready cottage | White-walled interior — optimal for detail shots, ring shots, and dress-on sequence; hair and makeup teams have ample space |
| 12:00 PM | First look — covered bridge or river gazebo | Red Water River location; late morning light is soft and workable; confirm which bridge or gazebo location with couple |
| 12:30 PM | Wedding party portraits across ranch property | Log chapel, gazebo, open field, barn exterior — allow 60+ minutes for the property scale; confirm transportation if ceremony site is far from barn |
| 2:30 PM | Guest arrival and ceremony | Confirm ceremony site at booking; covered bridge processional adds a distinctive visual element if using chapel or open-field site |
| 4:00 PM | Cocktail hour near barn | Begin transitioning guests to barn while couple completes any remaining portrait work at river locations |
| 6:30 PM | Golden hour portraits | Sun drops behind Black Hills ridge earlier than at west-facing venues; plan golden hour for 6:30–7:30 PM in summer rather than 8:00 PM |
| 7:00 PM | Reception dinner and toasts in two-story barn | Loft, dance floor, kitchenette; transition to off-camera flash after outdoor portrait window closes |

FAQ
Four distinct options: the log chapel in a ranch clearing, the gazebo overlooking the Red Water River, anywhere along or across the covered bridge, or an open-field ceremony on the ranch grounds. Most couples choose based on guest count and the kind of imagery they want — the chapel is intimate, the gazebo is river-front, and the open field gives the widest sky and largest guest count capacity. Your getting-ready cottage, ceremony site, and reception barn can all be on the same property without a single car ride for the couple.
Approximately 65–70 miles, about 1 hour and 10–15 minutes via I-90 west to Spearfish, then east on US-212 toward Saint Onge and Belle Fourche. The drive takes you through the northern Black Hills and out onto the open ranch country east of the Hills. For out-of-town guests, the venue has on-site cabins and full-hookup RV sites — many guests choose to stay on the property rather than driving back to Rapid City the same night.
Yes. The property has guest cabins and full, semi-full, and electrical RV hookups on-site. The old farmhouse is also available for the bridal party at additional cost. For large family weddings where out-of-town guests want to stay together in one place, the ranch setting with on-site lodging covers that need better than most venues in the region.
Contact the venue for current package pricing. Weekday bookings reportedly include the prior day free for setup, a real perk for vendors and for anyone who wants time to walk the property before the event day. The venue is family-run; Josh and Alison Besler are hands-on and response times are typically direct.
The getting-ready cottage is a white-walled room specifically set up for bridal preparation: clean walls, natural light, and an open layout that photographs well for detail shots (rings, florals, dress). Few prep rooms anywhere in the region are built this deliberately. The old farmhouse is also available for larger wedding parties who need additional space.
Yes, in one specific way. The Black Hills ridge sits to the southwest of Saint Onge, so the setting sun can drop behind the hills before full golden hour, roughly 30–45 minutes earlier than a west-facing canyon venue. We plan the golden hour portrait session for 6:30–7:30 PM in summer rather than 8:00–9:00 PM. The Red Water River, covered bridge, and open prairie hold good light through the day, so the ranch does not lean on the golden hour window the way a treeless venue might.
