Planning a Wedding During the Sturgis Rally

For one week every August, the northern Black Hills become a motorcycle city. Here is what that does to a wedding, and how to plan around it.

Planning a Wedding During the Sturgis Rally — Lavender Bouquet Photography

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally runs the first full week of August, roughly the 1st through the 10th depending on the year. Hundreds of thousands of riders arrive, and for that week the northern Black Hills operate differently. If your wedding date lands anywhere near it, this is the guide we wish every couple read before booking.

What actually changes

Traffic is the big one. I-90 between Rapid City and Sturgis carries rally traffic all week, and drive times along that corridor can double or triple. A vendor who quotes you 35 minutes needs 60 to 90 that week. Lodging is the second hit: rooms near Sturgis and Deadwood fill months ahead, and rates in Deadwood can triple. Depending on how busy the week gets, it may be best to book a room nearby for your photographers and any vendors coming from farther away, so nobody is stuck on a slow highway after the last dance. Rooms go early that week, so it is worth deciding sooner than you would expect.

Noise is the third change, and the most local one. Main Street Deadwood becomes a river of chrome. A quiet outdoor ceremony within earshot of a rally route will have a soundtrack.

Where it hits and where it does not

The rally lives along I-90 and in the northern Hills. Sturgis and Deadwood are the center of it. The farther your venue sits from that corridor, the less you feel it. The southern Hills around Custer State Park run close to normal, apart from busier highways. Venues on rural roads outside Sturgis itself stay calm on their own property, and the rally only reaches them through guest and vendor drive times.

If you keep the date

It can absolutely work, and the energy is honestly photographable. The rules are simple. Pad every drive estimate by 30 to 60 minutes. If your photographers or other vendors will need a room, book it as early as the venue. Warn out-of-town guests about room prices before they book blind. And put buffer in the timeline, so a slow highway costs you nothing but slack.

The smarter week

Here is our favorite trick, and we tell it to every August couple: take the week right after the rally ends. The crowds leave fast, the weather is still full summer, rooms reopen at normal prices, and the venues have just had their quietest week of the season. Some of the calmest August weddings we have photographed sat in that window.
